Bon. Partout. Sauf ici.
Right. Let's settle this straight away. I grumble everywhere. It's my job, my nature, my art form. I grumble in Egypt, I grumble in Leucate, I grumble in my sleep. Everywhere. Except here.
Bonjour, au fait. C'est le Druide. Toujours moi. Toujours raison.
Hello, by the way. It's the Druid. Still me. Still right. You don't change a winning formula.
On y va.
Icaraí de Amontada, then. A fishing village planted on the coast of Ceará, Brazil. Those in the know call it Icaraizinho. You will call it Icaraizinho too, because after a week there, you will be one of those in the know. It's automatic. There. Off we go.
1. Y ALLER (sans escale ni migraine)
1. GETTING THERE (no layover, no headache)
The plan fits on a till receipt: a direct flight Paris CDG → Fortaleza, about nine hours. Nine hours is two films, one questionable meal and a nap. Nothing heroic. Then the road to Icaraí. You watch the dunes, the palm trees and the donkeys roll past, and you arrive.
Money-wise, it's druidically simple. At the airport, you withdraw around 2000 reais. After that, your card does the rest. That's it. No shady exchange booth, no clever maths. Two thousand reais and a card. Even Gurnel manages it.
withdraw your reais at Fortaleza airport, before hitting the road. Cash is for the buggy, the coconut, and all the wonderful places where 4G has never set foot. And there are a few.
2. THE SEASON (wind clocks in like a keen civil servant)
The season runs from July to December, with its heart in September, October and November. Then the thermal wind shows up nearly every single day. Not "often". Not "usually". Nearly every day. The wind here has a work ethic I have never once observed in a human being.
L'eau est à 28 degrés. Vingt-huit.
The water sits at 28 degrees. Twenty-eight. You leave the wetsuit at home and free up space for saucisson. Forecasts, you check on Windguru. Mostly for the pleasure of gazing at green columns as far as the eye can see. It's good for morale.
3. THE SPOT (a Swiss army knife with sand around it)
Icaraizinho is a Swiss army knife. One village, one blade for every mood. The bay: wave and chop, the main playground. The point: the place to learn, quiet, with no audience to review your crashes. THE SPOT: flat and wave, wedged between the fishermen's cemetery and the fish traps. The best place on earth has an address like that. You couldn't make it up.
One rule at THE SPOT: the big rocks. They're there, they don't move, and they win every time. Scout them at low tide, memorise the place, and all shall be well. Further up, you have the upwind flat. And for expedition days: Caetanos upwind, Patos downwind. More on those below. That's the adventure chapter.

the bay has a serious wind hole right in the middle. A dead zone. You do not kite there, full stop. The local ritual: launch from Jan João's place and follow the coastline. That's what the locals do, and the locals are always right. Almost as often as me.
4. LE CAMP DE BASE (Icarai Kite House)
4. BASE CAMP (Icarai Kite House)

The Druid has taken up residence at the Icarai Kite House, 200 metres from the spot. Well, 200 metres as the feet fly. Give or take a cow. You count your steps, you're in the water. The terrace opens onto the wind, breakfast is homemade: tapioca, cuscuz, fruit, fresh eggs. And above all, there's the thing money can't buy: a real community of riders. In the evening, everyone replays their sessions. Everyone exaggerates a little. It's tradition.
And because the Druid negotiates better than he packs his gear, you get a reader's privilege: the code LEDRUIDE5 gives you 5% off at the Icarai Kite House. Five percent, said like that, sounds modest. But compare it with the booking platforms, which take their commission on the way through, and you'll see that in reality it's a lot more than 5%. The Druid doesn't do promos. He does structural savings. This code exists nowhere else. Not on Instagram, not on a flyer, not on a fridge. Here. It's the reward for those who read to the end.

5. LE MATOS (moins, c'est mieux)
5. THE GEAR (less is more)
I can already see the intern packing four kites, two boards and a foil "just in case". Put it all away. Here, the Druid's doctrine fits in one sentence: one versatile board and one single kite, the one that covers 80% of the time. The thermal is regular, the wind range is stable, your back will thank you and so will your luggage.
the space you save in the bag, you fill with margin. Margin is the wisdom of the traveller. And possibly saucisson. But that's between you and your conscience.
6. L'AVENTURE (une journée qui déborde)
6. THE ADVENTURE (a day that overflows)
One day, you put the kite down and go on an expedition. It's mandatory. Not legally, but spiritually.
La lagune de Caetanos, en buggy
Caetanos lagoon, by buggy
You set off by buggy, hair in the wind, dignity optional. Destination: Caetanos lagoon, upwind. Flat water, clean wind, nobody around. And at noon, the seafood lunch. Lobsters laid on the table like war trophies. You eat facing the sea, and for a moment you understand why people never come home from this country.

Le downwind de Patos
The Patos downwind

Another day, another heading: the downwind run to Patos. You let the wind carry you along the coast, the kilometres tick by on their own, and you arrive wearing that idiotic grin nobody can suppress after a downwinder. It's physiological. There is no cure.
La légende du toe-side de Gurnel
The legend of Gurnel's toe-side
Enfin, depuis mardi.
It was on that downwind that a legend was born. Gurnel, our spot-opening dwarf, had sworn for years that he could not ride toe-side. Impossible, he said. Not built for dwarves, he said. And there, mid-downwind, we look back: Gurnel, riding toe-side. Flawless. Relaxed. Had been the whole time. The verdict came down, sober and final: "What an absolute arse, your mate. He knew how to do it all along." There. That's the legend. It is now passed down from generation to generation. Well, since Tuesday.
L'apéro du retour, sur le rio
The homecoming apéro, on the rio

And on the way back, the apéro on the rio. The sun sinks over the dunes, the river draws a perfect S, and you toast the day. That's the moment everyone vows to come back next year. Statistically, everyone keeps that promise.
7. LE SHAMAN (Mat Bernier, gourou local)
7. THE SHAMAN (Mat Bernier, local guru)

You already know him if you follow the Brotherhood: Mat Bernier, aka the Shaman. Instructor, local guru, keeper of Icaraí. His school is Kite Experiment, affiliated with the Icarai Kite House. Everything happens in one place, everything is simple, and that's on purpose.
His teaching, I've seen it at work. It turns any hopeless case into a rider. Any. Ask Gurnel. The Shaman reads the wind before the wind knows what it's going to do, and he reads the student even faster. He is the only man I listen to without talking back. Which, where I'm concerned, qualifies as a miracle.
And who knows. Show up, stay humble, and perhaps one day you too will earn your Brotherhood card. In the meantime, a word from a man of experience: you shall be urbane with the Shaman.

8. THE VILLAGE FIGURES (the real addresses have faces)

First, Master Fabio. Undisputed authority on the caipirinha. His work has been rated 8.5 on the Michel scale, which means nothing to you, and that's normal: the Michel scale is confidential and demanding. It goes up to 12, but no one has ever seen Michel hand out more than a 9. An 8.5, on that scale, is a monument.
9. WHEN THE WIND GOES DOWN (the village gets up)

Icaraizinho isn't a postcard set that gets switched off at night. It's a living village. Some nights, a fire on the sand, around which the stories grow taller as the embers grow lower. Mine included. Mine especially. And once a year, the event: the Regata. The fishermen's festival. The bay turns into a colour chart of sails, there's a concert on the beach, and the whole village shows up, kids and elders alike. Once a year, I said. Not every weekend. If your stay lands on it, thank your calendar and do it justice.

Voilà. Icaraizinho. Rarement. Mais ça arrive.
There. Icaraizinho. The only place on earth where the Druid does not grumble. If you ever cross paths with me there and I'm grumbling anyway, it means the wind has dropped. It happens. Rarely. But it happens.
Prochain Jeudredi : un autre spot. Le Grimoire ne dort jamais. Moi si, mais le Grimoire, jamais.
Next Jeudredi: another spot. The Grimoire never sleeps. I do, but the Grimoire, never.
